Common Types Of Bursitis
Bursae are small sacs of fluid that provide cushion for joint tissues. Your body has about 140 of these sacs. The inflammation of the bursae is called bursitis. This causes swelling and stiffness in the joints.
Some bursae are more prone to the specific areas, such as:
Knee
The knee has several bursae, and some are highly susceptible to knee bursitis.
- Prepatellar. A lump in the front of your kneecap is tender and stiff. Frequent kneeling is the most common cause. It is also prone to septic bursitis, which is caused by infection. This requires immediate medical attention.
- Pes anserine. Pain and swelling to the inside of the knee. Tight hamstrings are a common cause of this pain from pes anserine bursitis.
- Iliotibial. Knee pain will be located on the outside of the knee with this condition and in this area. There will be tissue between the tibia bone and the iliotibial (IT) band. Therefore, when it’s too tight, the disease can develop.
Elbow
The olecranon bursae are highly prone to inflammation. You will notice swelling at the tip of the elbow. Repeatedly resting weight on the elbow can irritate the area and cause elbow pain. In fact, it is also prone to septic bursitis.
Heel Bursitis
Two types of this disease commonly affect the heel, such as:
- Retrocalcaneal. This is most often linked to moderate and high-impact activity. Foot and ankle issues like Achilles tendonitis can also cause this condition.
- Subcutaneous calcaneal. Poorly fitting shoes are often to blame for this inflammation. A tough, red lump at the heel is the most common sign.
Shoulder
Shoulder bursitis can have several causes. But repeated overhead motion is the most common cause. Swimming, painting, and pitchers are prone to developing. It is also associated with shoulder impingement syndrome.
Hip Bursitis
Two types of hip bursae that are prone to the disease are as follows:
- Trochanteric. This is often linked to the greater trochanter. The number one cause of this includes prolonged sitting, falls, and weak gluteal muscles. The upper curve of the thigh will feel tender and painful.
- Iliopsoas. This is marked by pain in the hip and groin area. This type can affect anyone but is most common among athletes.
All forms of the disease are painful. But you cannot ignore the hip pain. If left, the condition can become chronic. Your doctor can properly diagnose and devise effective treatments for you.
